Visual impairment

St. Rose’s school also employs a full time Qualified Teacher for the Visually Impaired (QTVI). The teacher is trained in Braille at Stage 2 and also works with students with Multi-disabilities and Visual Impairment (MDVI).
It is recognised that students with visual impairment require further support to maximise their access to the school’s curriculum. The QTVI works with pupil’s individually in the Multisensory Light and Dark Room and in class settings where appropriate.
All students with Visual Impairment are seen regularly by the QTVI. A Functional Vision Assessment is carried out and advice and guidance is given to all staff about the student’s vision. This ensures that strategies are in place to reduce the barriers to their learning in classroom settings.
Having a QTVI on site secures that the pupil’s needs are provided for and issues that arrive can be addressed quickly. The QTVI also liaises with parents and the students Ophthalmologist where appropriate.
