Hearing impairment
A hearing impaired child needs additional support to focus on their studies with minimal disruption. To ensure this happens, St Rose’s employs a full time qualified teacher of the deaf, in addition to teachers and support staff with BSL and Makaton qualifications.
Sessions will vary for each child from enjoying and responding to sound vibrations, sounds and sign to using BSL and Makaton sign language. For some young people, language is assessed and developed during a joint session with our speech and language therapists.
By liaising with the audiologist at hospitals, we can be confident that each child is receiving the very best care. Knowledge gained from these links is shared amongst the support staff, parents and carers.
At any time, our teacher of the deaf can be called on to ensure a child’s audiological equipment is working properly with problems addressed quickly and minor repairs undertaken on site.
